Life under attack in New Mexico and Nationally
When we say that God is the author of Life from the Womb to Natural death, that is exactly what we mean. But there are ungodly forces in this world currently attacking life at both ends of the spectrum. By attacking the most vulnerable lives, they also are attacking God who is the Giver of Life. To discard the unborn or the aged and infirmed (in some cases, the depressed) is to give God the middle finger of rebellion. It is to reject God and his authority.
Psalm 36 tells us that the wicked have no fear of God. This is true for those who promote abortion and euthanasian. They snub their noses at God and believe they are above and immune to him. Sadly many will claim that they are honoring God, but at the same time refuse to obey him. Psalm 36 explains how this can happen. Verse 2 tells us that this person flatters himself so much that he cannot even detect his own sin. Further on we are told they carry out wicked schemes and plots. Indeed we plainly see that happening.
This blatant defiance and disregard for the Creator can cause us to become angry and impatient for God to do something in his own defense. And we pray for that. But then we come to Psalm 37. This psalm gives us practical and much needed advice for our reaction to these ungodly and arrogant people. Several times we are told not to fret because of their misdeeds and rejection of God. Fret is another word for worry. Or it could be said “Do not stress out”. Why? because God himself is going to take care of this. Instead, we are to trust God, delight in him, commit our way to him. And we are to do good. Psalm 37: 7 tells us to wait patiently for God. The next verse tells us to refrain from anger. Again we are told not to worry or fret because that only leads us to give up on God, take things into our own hands and commit evil.
In the current political tensions, we see that many people instead of relying on God and doing good, choose instead a path of anger and violence. Sometimes they even call acting out their frustrations “Good”. Yet the results are evil. Destruction, violence, and death follow. This is true on both the progressive and conservative sides of politics. Acting out of anger causes harm, or as Psalms calls it “evil”.
So what is the good that we should be doing. There are two great “good deeds” which we can and must do. First pray! Second, make your voice heard. We are called elsewhere in scripture to speak up for those who have no voice. We are called to defend the defenseless. This absolutely describes the situation of the unborn who are helpless in their mother’s womb. In our society, we are given the right, the responsibility to express our convictions to those in authority. Not just in voting, but by word, both written and verbal. Call, write, pray. Lives depend on it.
